H1N1 Flu Update

Dear Parents and Guardians:

As you know, there are different strains of the flu affecting Massachusetts, including the new H1N1 strain (“swine flu”). So far, the symptoms of the new H1N1 flu are similar to those of the seasonal flu. But any flu virus can cause serious illness, so we are working closely with state and local officials to try to prevent the spread of the flu among students and staff. We are receiving daily updates from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Although virtually all schools are open, a number of schools have been closed because of high rates of student absence. Please think about how you would manage child care if a closure were necessary.

These are steps every parent can take to lower their children's chances of getting sick:

  • Washing hands often for at least 20 seconds before and after snacks and meals
  • Hand sanitizer (which is held by staff of our younger students)
  • Cough and sneeze into a tissue (discard immediately) or into a sleeve
  • Get plenty of rest, fluids and exercise; foster wellness
  • Stay home from school if you have a cough or sore throat that is accompanied by a fever greater than 100°; keep your child out of community activities
  • Seek medical care for your child if mild symptoms increase or your child has a chronic illness or condition
  • Communicate with your school nurse about why your child is out

If your child is diagnosed with a flu illness, the child needs to stay home from school for a mandated seven days

Most people who get the flu do not need to seek medical care and do not need to be tested for H1N1 flu. However, certain people may be at increased risk for complications from the flu. If they have been in contact with someone with the flu, the following individuals, or their guardians, should talk with a doctor. They include:

  • People over 65 or under 2 years of age
  • People with chronic lung, heart, kidney or liver disorders
  • People with compromised immune systems
  • Pregnant women
  • Children less than 18 years old who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy

We appreciate your continued cooperation and support as we work together to reduce the spread of the flu in our communities.

Sincerely,

Susan M. Gorky
